X-ray image intensifiers and flat panel detectors are two distinct imaging devices, differing mainly in working principles, application scenarios and performance characteristics.

An X-ray  image intensifier is a device that converts faint light signals into visible images through an electron-optical system, commonly used for imaging in low-light environments such as night vision equipment and medical X-ray machines. It converts light signals into electrons via a photocathode, then produces visible light images through electron multiplication and conversion on a fluorescent screen. The advantages of image intensifiers include high sensitivity and fast response speed, but they come with drawbacks like image distortion and limited service life.

A flat panel detector, by contrast, is a direct digital imaging device primarily used for X-ray imaging in scenarios such as medical CT and industrial inspection. It converts X-rays into electrical signals through a scintillator or direct conversion material, which are then read and digitized by a TFT array. Flat panel detectors feature high image resolution, wide dynamic range, no distortion and a relatively long service life, but they are costly and sensitive to temperature.

In terms of imaging area, the circular imaging field of an image intensifier only covers a small portion of the imaged object, while the square imaging field of a flat panel detector offers a much larger field of view. It can capture far more image content, making it more convenient for doctors to observe and make accurate diagnoses. These are the key differences between flat panel detectors and image intensifiers.
