If you are sourcing a high tension power supply for an X-ray image intensifier (XRII), you already know the awkward part: the tube is a standard item, the supply is not. Every 6″, 9″ or 12″ intensifier — whatever its lineage — carries its own electrode map, its own high-voltage connector, and its own expected behaviour for brightness control. Buy a generic supply and you get one of two outcomes: it does not fit, or it fits and then shows you ripple, drift or arc damage three months into the field.

What an image intensifier supply is really doing
An XRII is not a single high-voltage load. It is a stack of electrodes that must sit at carefully related potentials:
– Photocathode / input screen at a large negative potential relative to the output phosphor
– Focusing electrodes (G1–G4, sometimes G5) at defined fractions of the total accelerating voltage
– Anode / output phosphor near ground potential
– G1 grid used as the fast control element for brightness — this is the electrode your automatic brightness control (ABC) loop actually drives
Retrofit and replacement: the most common real-world order
A large share of custom II supply enquiries are not new designs at all — they are replacements for an OEM unit that has been discontinued, or a service company standardizing spares across a mixed fleet.
Three things make a retrofit succeed:
– A sample of the original unit, or a clear photo set with dimensions and connector detail. A drawing alone rarely captures keying and clearance.
– The tube’s electrode data. If the original datasheet is gone, a measured divider ratio from a working unit is enough to start.
– Agreement on the acceptance test. Define what “working” means before shipping: output accuracy at three setpoints, ripple at full load, 8-hour drift, and a functional check against the tube.
Compliance: what to ask for, and what it actually covers
X-ray generators and their supplies fall under medical electrical equipment safety and EMC standards. A credible supplier should be able to speak to:
– IEC 60601-1 — general safety, including creepage and clearance for the HV section
– IEC 60601-1-2 — EMC, emissions and immunity
– IEC 60601-2-7 / 60601-2-54 — particular requirements relevant to diagnostic X-ray generators and radiological equipment
– RoHS / REACH — material declarations for the bill of materials
– ISO 13485 — quality system, if you are buying as part of a medical device programme
How to send an enquiry that gets a fast, accurate quote
Suppliers quote slowly when the input is vague. This checklist typically cuts a week out of the cycle:
– Tube make, model and size (6″ / 9″ / 12″), or a photo of the label
– Required electrode voltages and currents, or the original supply’s model number
– Ripple and stability targets, plus how you will measure them
– Connector type, or photos of the connector and cable
– Mechanical envelope, mounting pattern, available airflow
– Control interface and the host controller you are using
– Annual quantity, first-order quantity, and whether a sample is required
– Destination country, and whether you need the document pack in a specific language
– Target certification and any local registration requirements
With that, a configured quotation — including lead time and MOQ — is normally possible within two to three working days.
Ordering, samples and support
– MOQ — commonly 1–5 units for configured retrofit builds; lower for evaluation samples
– Samples — evaluation units are usually available with a short test report; expect a sample fee that is creditable against the first production order
– Lead time — 4–6 weeks for configured units, 10–14 weeks for new mechanical or firmware design
– Warranty — 12–24 months is standard; confirm whether the warranty covers the HV cable assembly and whether arc damage to the tube is excluded
– After-sales — ask for a named technical contact, a fault-code table, and a replacement-unit policy. For field service companies, an advance-replacement arrangement is usually worth more than a discount
Send us the tube model, the original supply part number if you have one, and a photo of the connector. We will come back with a proposed electrode profile, a mechanical envelope drawing and a configured quotation — usually within two to three working days.
